It’s that time of year again where kids and people dress up in costumes and go trick or treating or attend parties/gatherings. Others enjoy more of the simple pleasures like watching scary movies/shows at home OR decorating the house inside & out with the scariest of decorations. Of course, I’m talking about Halloween, so it’s the perfect time to kick off the spooky season with a brand new, Halloween-themed song by Laura Cheadle. “Medusa” is a scary, good song and listeners are sure to enjoy this musical treat. Laura and I talk about the new single, her own Halloween traditions & much more!

J Rae: How did the idea come about originally to record a Halloween track and make a video? You can SKOPE out the official video for “Medusa right here:

Laura Cheadle: This happened completely organically! After I finished recording “Medusa” in its entirety, a lightbulb moment went off like ‘This would make a perfect Halloween song!’

J Rae: “Medusa” has such a catchy hook and is very enjoyable to listen to. What made you choose the title “Medusa” for this new song?

Laura Cheadle: “Medusa” is about people who drain your energy and only like you when you are down. The idea came from personal experiences of people I’ve met that are not there for you when you are at your best. We felt “Medusa” was the perfect metaphor as she turned people into stone while looking into her eyes.

J Rae: I see that you, James Cheadle and Steven Caban wrote “Medusa” and can you tell us all how that songwriting collaboration came about?

Laura Cheadle: Yes! The three of us are a ‘dream team’ of creativity. We all collaborated on the writing of my upcoming new album ‘Mannequin’ over a three year period. This album will be out January 1st with So Bold Ent and Sony Orchard. I have never been more proud of an album! For “Medusa”, I came into the studio one day with the idea of the song and we all wrote it in about an hour. We couldn’t believe how catchy it came out!

J Rae: Your vocals on this new track are so pure and fine-tuned and I have to ask what is your secret to keeping your voice in top shape?

Laura Cheadle: I am a vegan so not having dairy truly helps the vocal cords! I’m constantly practicing my scales and drinking a ton of tea and taking vitamins. I also exercise daily and meditate so I like to keep my mind, body and spirit in full alignment :)

J Rae: Do you have any Halloween traditions yourself and how about favorite Halloween candy if you have one?

Laura Cheadle: I love that Reese’s finally released oat milk peanut butter cups. I’m in heaven! I am obsessed with the fall so I love carving pumpkins and still dressing up of course! When I was a kid, my family always had the house with the ‘haunted house’ and we would scare neighborhood kids while giving out candy. One time, I climbed into a scarecrow costume and would sit on the porch and scare the kids who walked up!

J Rae: Did you used to dress up for Halloween as a kid and go trick or treating? If so, what are some of your fondest memories AND how about favorite costume of all time?

Laura Cheadle: I always dressed up and continue to do so! My favorite costume of all time would be dressing as a hippie for many years since I was very young. I think I was always destined to live this hippie mind set!

J Rae: What are some of your personal favorite Halloween-themed songs that just make the perfect soundtrack for this time of year? Going off of that, any movies or television programs you enjoy watching in the spirit of Halloween?

Laura Cheadle: This past weekend, I went to the drive-in movie theater and saw a double feature of ‘Hocus Pocus’ and ‘Haunted Mansion’ I loved it! I am a scaredy cat so the fun Halloween movies are my kind of viewing! I also love the Halloween song ‘Monster Mash’. It’s a true classic and I’ve actually performed this song live where I made my own lyrics specific to the people in the audience.

J Rae: I’m curious to know if the Funky Soulstress herself puts up Halloween decorations at her home. If so, what is your particular style?

Laura Cheadle: I go all out! I currently have a black cat, pumpkins and scarecrows all over my home.

J Rae: “Medusa” is such a fun song and I have to imagine you had a blast recording this track. What was the whole experience like and how would you sum it all up?

Laura Cheadle: This song was meant to be created! Like I said earlier, it was written in about an hour. I also recorded the vocals with such ease. I really love the lyrics that resonate with my life. It’s a huge metaphor for people trying to bring you down. They will never win! You be you!

J Rae: How did the style of “Medusa” differ from some of your other material? What were some of the key differences?

Laura Cheadle: I love that the track is a spooky pop song with some dance and theatrical undertones! I love being able to fully show my vocal range and styles. I feel like this song is universal and such a perfect song for Halloween and beyond! “Medusa”, in my opinion, is the scariest of all!

J Rae: How has the response been thus far for “Medusa” and what are you most proud of with this song?

Laura Cheadle: People are loving it, especially on Tik Tok! I don’t think many people release Halloween songs, so this was super fun for me! We needed a new Halloween song! This song is exclusively available on https://lauracheadle.bandcamp.com/track/medusa but WILL be available globally on everything January 1st when it’s released with my new album ‘Mannequin’ :)

J Rae: What are your plans for Halloween this year and for the rest of 2023?

Laura Cheadle: I am going to a few super spooky Halloween parties! The beauty of this record is that it was recorded live, so includes that raw energy that is infectious. Tim Foley added a full band here to make the live experience stand out and so that the music would shine. ‘Stop Along The Way’ features Tim Foley on vocals & guitar, Mike ‘Sax’ McLaughlin on tenor and soprano saxophones, Richard Gates on bass and educator Fabio Pirozzolo on percussion. The album was recorded at Middleview Studio with engineer Chris Rival. Tim Foley Group brought nine tracks to life with skilled and energetic playing. Electricity was certainly in the air during the making of ‘Stop Along The Way’.

The record kicks off with a smooth delivery from Tim Foley on “You Don’t Treat Me Right” where he displays a cool approach vocally. Next, the listener will hear solid instrumentation and excellent direction on “You Believed It So”. I believe it is so that Tim Foley nailed this song overall and I also believe in Tim Foley Group, as a whole. On track three, “I Didn’t Say”, one will receive a sincere delivery vocally & musically as Tim Foley Group is smooth sailing through this track. You get a stellar instrumental piece on the title track, “Stop Along The Way”, as Tim Foley Group is blowing it out of the water! Up next, the listener receives a finely-composed composition titled “Look Up At The Moon” that sails along flawlessly. Track six, “If I Stayed”, offers up a stylish vibe and the flow is also quite nice. Tim Foley gives a soul-stirring performance on “So It Goes” where you are hooked in from start to finish. We hear another great instrumental piece on “New Time” that truly POPS! It is a fine finish for Tim Foley Group on “Southhold Morning” where all musicians go out in a low-key yet fulfilling fashion.

I was thoroughly impressed with the efforts of Tim Foley Group on ‘Stop Along The Way’. This album dropped on July 28 and I suggest you go get a copy right now! This record should get plenty of spins nationwide and major traction. ‘Stop Along The Way’ is full of life and Tim Foley Group proves that they are serious musicians on a mission to cut a top-shelf record. I would say mission accomplished, so ‘Stop Along The Way’ to hear for yourself.

Charu Suri is a highly distinguished pianist/composer AND award-winning journalist who is originally from South India.  Charu’s latest release is titled ‘RAGS & RAGAS’ and she is literally revolutionizing music.  This quite possibly could be the very first album to combine Indian ragas and New Orleans-style jazz.  Charu is no stranger to thinking outside the box when it comes to writing original compositions.  Charu Suri is a true trailblazer when it comes to composing music as she crosses musical boundaries and bends the musical spectrum on ‘RAGS & RAGAS’!

‘RAGS & RAGAS’ contains eight tracks and each one different from the next.  First, get ready to take a “Bourbon Street Stroll” where the scene is pleasant and the mood is just right.  “Bourbon Street Stroll” is one bright composition and excellent way to kick off the album.  Next, you get an up-tempo number that gets you excited and this is one “Parade” you won’t want to miss!  Track three, “Raga Rag #1 Electric Version” offers up an appealing sound that instantly draws you in.  Charu delivers a strong performance on “Bhairavi Blues” as the listener will be fully connected to the overall music.  It’s smooth sailing on “French Quarter” as peaceful notes come pouring out of the speakers.  A calming sensation rushes over you on “French Quarter” as Charu Suri delivers a stellar performance.  Track six, “Raga Rag #1 Acoustic Version”, is one lively number that jumps out at you and just as powerful as the electric version.  “Spring in New Orleans” is in the air next, and it feels just fine!  Charu ends on a glorious note where everyone can enjoy themselves and do the “Jackson Square Waltz”.

J Rae: I have worked with you numerous times over the years via Skope and can honestly say I have been a fan from the start! How have you evolved, not just as an artist, but also as a person over time?

Laura Cheadle: Thank you for the continued support! I love Skope Mag! I have definitely evolved spiritually as a person. Throughout my life as an artist, I have become more fearless on stage. I live for the rush of performing and it feels like I found my groove. As a person, I have gone through so many ups and downs with personal healing and that has reflected into my music. I truly know who I am now and that makes my artistic identity very genuine.

J Rae: Next, we have to talk about your new music video for “Time Thief” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZbd2CyRS0Q) because I was personally blown away! I thought it was a fantastic job overall where visually and sound-wise, everything was clicking. How did the initial idea come about to make this video?

Laura Cheadle: This video was the brainchild of myself and director John Hoehn of Life After Television Network. John instantly ‘got’ the concept and that time is precious and that having your time ‘stolen’ has a huge impact.

There are so many hidden messages and clues throughout the video so it’s definitely worth watching it a few times to catch them all!

J Rae: I recall doing a review on your single “Time Thief” back in March of 2023 for Skope, https://skopemag.com/2023/03/30/laura-cheadle-right-on-the-money-with-time-thief. I was thoroughly impressed with your performance then and equally impressed with your performance on this new video. Where does the inspiration and drive come from to step out and deliver a stellar performance each time whether it be recording a track, performing live or filming a music video? Going off of that, how does the performance level differ between the three different approaches?

Laura Cheadle: ‘Time Thief’ was a song that I truly lived. I was with someone for a good amount of time that wasn’t right for me where I felt like time was literally passing me by. When I sang it, I felt every single emotion because I truly felt it. The same goes for the performance in the music video. I literally did one take for the music video because I truly lived this feeling. That emotion is displayed in the final product of the music video. I’m so proud of how it came out!

J Rae: You had a terrific team involved with the making of the “Time Thief” music video. What was it like working with them and can you tell me a little bit about each person and the role he or she played? Also, what did you learn working with each individual on this project?

Laura Cheadle: We creatively worked on it together and enlisted Robin Passmore and Alaina Hubbard to do the choreography and play my ‘stalker’. We filmed at Gregg Perry’s Antique Clock shop which features so many incredible clocks from different moments of time. This really played beautifully into the concept of time!

This collaborative effort with all the above and John Hoehn felt incredible because we were all on the same creative page! It was truly effortless.

J Rae: How has the response been thus far for “Time Thief” and how does the reaction stack up vs. previous releases?

Laura Cheadle: “Time Thief” is already at over half a million streams on Spotify alone! This is far beyond any of my other releases. I really do feel like growth as an artist is shining through and I’ve found my footing as an artist. I loved that I was able to show off every nuance and range of my voice in this track.

I am so thankful to my label So Bold Entertainment and Sony Orchard for the support!

J Rae: I know you have been playing with your family for years, which is amazing. Can you tell me about each person and what each family member brings to the Laura Cheadle experience? What’s it been like to perform, as a family unit, for so long and what does it mean to you personally on a deeper scale?

Laura Cheadle: My dad has always been such an incredible force. He is such a talented musician and piano player. He also plays left hand bass simultaneously where people ‘wonder’ where the bass player is! My brother rocks his guitar and my various drummers that step in really feel our groove as a unit. I love being able to express myself and have my family behind me with each new song I write.

J Rae: You have such a catchy style and I’ve used different terms over the years to describe the Laura Cheadle sound. Skope and I would love to hear a brand new term being coined for 2023 from the Funky Soulstress herself!

Laura Cheadle: Haha! The beauty of mine is that I never liked to be labeled. I feel that I grow and evolve and never like to stick to the same thing. I’m not always in the same mood musically. Sometimes, I’m in a blues mood, other times I’m feeling acoustic singer- songwriter. I feel like the best way to describe me is funky soul stress!

J Rae: What are some of your other interests and have you picked up any new hobbies as of recently?

Laura Cheadle: I have always been a runner, so I love to run. The ‘runners high’ helps me with my creativity. I often write songs while on the treadmill! I’ve always been a vegan, so I love exploring new vegan restaurants and vegan cooking styles.

J Rae: With the release of this excellent, new music video for “Time Thief”, what’s next for Laura Cheadle? Any big plans in the works?

Laura Cheadle: Oh yes! I have a full album coming out with So Bold Entertainment/Sony Orchard. I wrote so many songs over the past few years. The new album is called ‘Mannequin’ and the next single will be out this fall!

J Rae: Ending on a positive note, are you able to offer up words of encouragement for anyone out there that is reading this? Looking to brighten someone’s day, anything you could add that could inspire an individual and maybe even help change his/her life for the better?

Laura Cheadle: Work really hard at your craft and stick to your individuality! Never let people bring you down or try to change you! It costs nothing to be kind!

Rene Erickson releases a phenomenal instrumental track called “Never Gone”. This multi-talented guitarist and songwriter has released the lead single, “Never Gone”, off of the album titled Silent Street. Rene Erickson is obviously a multi-dimensional artist, but the urge and thrill to create new art is “Never Gone”.

What I loved most about this song is that Rene is literally making the guitar speak. No words needed as the guitar does all the talking. With stellar instrumentation, Rene Erickson strums those guitar strings with finesse. “Never Gone” is melodic to the core and is one top-tier recording for the ages!

If you’re looking for something completely different, then you came to the right place! You won’t get the classical Ludwig here but rather the Vincent version that does include classic elements from the 80s and 90s. One will hear dynamic arrangements for voice, piano, synthesizers, guitar, bass and sampled percussion. ‘Needle and Thread’ is like nothing you have ever heard before, I can bet money on that!

Based in Minneapolis, MN, The Wonsers is a rock back originally formed by three brothers, Peter, John and Matt Van Dyke. The group started up in 1992 and The Wonsers was named after their mother’s maiden name. The Wonsers released three records from 1994-2000 and after over 20 years, the brothers are back with the recent release titled ‘You Never Knew Me When I Was Young 2.0’.

This new EP is a re-release of The Wonsers’ 1996 EP called ‘You Never Knew Me When I Was Young’. With this revisited, ‘2.0’ version, The Wonsers included a bonus, live cut of “Mess” that was recorded back in the 90s. The Wonsers are back in 2023 with ‘You Never Knew Me When I Was Young 2.0’ proving that music never dies! If anything, this proves that the itch to create new music grows stronger over time for musicians and the wait for The Wonsers is over!

The current lineup includes: Peter Van Dyke on bass, keyboards & drums and John Van Dyke on guitar & vocals. Previous members include: Matt Van Dyke, Thomas Case, Matt Cartee and Tommy Tousey. The EP kicks off with “Skyline Bridge” and right away you hear that raw, rock energy that embodies the spirit of The Wonsers. “Skyline Bridge” is holding up nicely and standing tall where good times and a fun sound can be heard. “Flowers” is up next and what a fresh batch of notes this is. The Wonsers deliver a strong performance proving that these “Flowers” are fully blooming. The following track, “Mess”, connects with the audience and lyrically relates with the idea of being a mess emotionally. With solid riffs in place, The Wonsers do one hell of a job making a big ball of “Mess” sound like the perfect gift. “Montana” drags along at just the right pace as The Wonsers play like seasoned vets on this song. David Singley is a talented singer-songwriter-guitarist from Saint Paul, Minnesota who has decades of experience backing world-class artists and performers. All music on this new release was mixed & produced by David Singley and mastered by Randy Leroy at Tonal Park Studios, Takoma Park, Maryland. As a guitarist, Singley has shared the stage with such jazz experts as: Bob Brookmeyer, George Shearing, James Moody, Bob Mintzer, Phil Woods, Ernestine Anderson, Paquito d’Rivera, Slide Hampton, Bob Florence, Tal Farlow and Dave Weckl. His musical collaborations have taken him across North America appearing with Perry Como, Debbie Gibson, Gene Pitney, Idina Menzel, Mary Wells, Debbie Reynolds, Shari Lewis & Lambchop and many others. As soon as I hit play, I am hit with such an appealing sound and inviting melody on “Change Gonna Come”. This song draws you in immediately due to a feel-good atmosphere and optimistic mindset on “Change Gonna Come”. Next is “Can’t Find My Way Back” that is the perfect, lil ditty that you can dance a jig to and just let loose. Track three, “Love Will Take Its Time”, offers up a warm and mellow tone that has a distinct, sentimental value. “Love Will Take Its Time” hits you inside and pulls you in due to a loving groove that wraps around you. David Singley ends the 4-song set with a wonderful arrangement and powerful performance on “Go Back Home”. This final composition will move you with deeply personal and touching lyrics thanks to Singley’s emotional delivery.

David Singley provides songs that are reflective, heartfelt and fun as listeners everywhere will enjoy ‘The Singles’. One can sense the joy and creativity that went into the making of this new album titled ‘And The Moon Rising’. This music project came about when producer and longtime friend, Marcus Vichert, approached Trevor Owen about cutting a new record. The rest is history as ‘And The Moon Rising’ was born!

The new album includes six of Trevor’s own songs, including one co-written with Marcus Vichert, and four interpretations Trevor Owen has played over the years. Trevor Owen handles guitars and vocals plus piano on the song “I Get That Feeling”. Other musicians on ‘And The Moon Rising’ include: Jeff Beauchamp on bass for four tracks & vocals, Jamie Bird on drums, percussion and vocals, Donavon LeNabat on keyboards & vocals, Keira McArthur on cello & vocals and Marcus Vichert on slide, acoustic, sustainer and mando-guitars. Braden Sauder, with Marquee Sound, served as engineer for ‘And The Moon Rising’ and Stephen Stepanic mastered the entire album at Joao Carvalho Mastering. The whole project came together wonderfully as Trevor Owen is shining bright with ‘And The Moon Rising’.

The record kicks off with the title track that offers a pleasant and simple melody right out of the gates. “And The Moon Rising” will move you and get your attention right away as the listener gets hooked into the Trevor Owen sound. Musical sparks are flying next on “Fire Moon” where things certainly seem to be heating up for Trevor Owen. Track three, “Horizontal”, provides a jazzy ‘n’ classy touch and is a catchy tune you will want to snap your fingers to. Emotional notes come pouring out on the following song, “I Get That Feeling”, where one will get lost within the music. What a great feeling it is because “I Get That Feeling” is just full of love and provides a sense of comfort toward the listener. Prepare to sway left and right to the welcoming sounds of “Make Me Feel” where the entertaining beat will consume you. Track six, “The More, the More”, supplies plenty of good vibes where you will hear sensible lyrics like: “The more we know, the more we can know”. “The message behind “The More, the More” stands out and gives the listener something to chew on. Simple as that! Trevor Owen hits you with a snazzy & peppy arrangement on “Not The Only One” where the melody feels oh so right! I’m truly enjoying the bluesy hook on “Richland Woman Blues”, which also packs a positive punch of sound. Trevor delivers a solid performance with potent lyrics on “Sweet Bitter” that will have a direct impact on the listener. “Sweet Bitter” contains many thought-provoking lines like: “Fiction is the truth, the truth is in the story.” Trevor Owen provides the perfect ending with “Tell Me What It Looks Like” where it all revolves around the true meaning of love.

I may not know what it looks like but I can definitely tell the readers what it sounds like when it comes to this 10-song set. ‘And The Moon Rising’ is filled with fun, meaningful and heartfelt songs that Trevor Owen carefully crafted one by one. With rich material and pristine instrumentation, ‘And The Moon Rising’ is a BIG hit! Whether there is a full moon on the way or not, Trevor Owen has proved that the stars have aligned with his glowing performance on ‘And The Moon Rising’.

Moving along, the audience receives a wonderful arrangement and striking melodies that grab you on “Don’t Be Long”. Track six, “Never Trust a Barber” is a peculiar sort of cut that peaks your curiosity and is a hair-raising experience you won’t soon forget. “Falls Thistlethwaite” has a nice flow musically while “Pipedream Blues” is off the tracks yet steady as hell! We’ve arrived at the title track, “Tincture for Trouble”, that supplies a stellar arrangement and highlights Achilles Tenderloin as a premier music artist. Time to end the 10-song set with some good, old-fashioned “Howlin’ at the Earth” where Achilles T is singin’ the blues to the entire world. “Howlin’ at the Earth” is a compelling number, so I say howl away and don’t hold back!

‘Tincture for Trouble’ is the fifth album release for Achilles Tenderloin and features an array of featured guest artists. With folk, blues and everything else in between, Achilles brings his own flavor to the table and it’s refreshing to hear. Achilles Tenderloin is authentic to say the least and ‘Tincture for Trouble’ gets my stamp of approval for authenticity.

‘Tune It Out’ is the second album release for singer/songwriter & guitarist Marsden who is based in Madison, Wisconsin. Marsden combines alternative/grunge rock with a modern, Indie twist that works out wonderfully. With musical influences that range from: Jerry Cantrell and John Frusciante to Ian Thornley, David Gilmore and even Chris Cornell, Marsden covers a wide range on ‘Tune It Out’. This new record actually took over 2 years to complete, so I can’t wait to tune into ‘Tune It Out’ right now!

The album kicks off with a catchy rhythm and cool tempo with “End On End”. The golden melody draws the listener in immediately on “End on End” where there is a mass appeal factor present. Next is the title track, “Tune It Out”, where Marsden can be heard rockin’ on and jammin’ out! I am fully tuned in to this song where “Tune It Out” exhibits solid instrumentation. Marsden is alive & well on the following number, “In This Zoo”, where a somber tone and intriguing melody hits you like a ton of bricks. I’m listening intently to “In This Zoo” because it displays an interesting blast of sound. Track four, “Doubt”, offers up hard rockin’ riffs hitting your eardrums with Marsden delivering one dynamic performance. Marsden is lighting up the airwaves next with “Running in the Dark” where he is all geared up and driving this song home with authority. Marsden is playing & singing like a true champ on the next installment and it’s audibly “Obvious”. Marsden is in full control and in the zone on “Obvious” and there is no “Doubt” about that! It’s time to reach deep into your “Pocket” and pull out a nice, shiny musical piece. “Pocket” pulls you in and peaks your curiosity right from the start, so it’s time to empty out your “Pocket” and discover a wealth of rich notes. Track eight, “Hello”, is a glowing instrumental that showcases heavy richness within its chords. Don’t say goodbye to this gem, but rather say “Hello”! Time to embrace the “American Dream” next where Marsden is aiming high and reigning supreme. The audience receives an epic finale on “Fruitless” where Marsden takes you on a wondrous journey through lush soundscapes.
